December 2013
Hi folks. The new season has had a great start. Our Darts program is growing with some new members playing and the After 5 dinner groups are back in full swing. Our TGIF dinners will begin soon. . These in house events are growing steadily in popularity and offer a great opportunity to bring along your friends and also to bring new members. Watch for dates and menus etc, as they are advertised.
Our Auction and Bridge Afternoon Teas are a great success, bringing in good revenues. This bi-monthly event is now at maximum capacity, with a growing waiting list.
We held our 4th Annual Indoor Garden Party and Turkey Teas event in September with lots of fun with games of chance. We would like to expand on this event. Your suggestions would be very welcome.
We held our 4th Annual Indoor Garden Party and Turkey Teas event in September with lots of fun with games of chance. We would like to expand on this event. Your suggestions would be very welcome.
Our Flipper/Roast Beef Dinner was another raging success. This twice yearly event is drawing a great crowd of people who pass on many complements and describe it as not only a top notch dinner, but also a fine place to meet up with old friends and acquaintances.
Our Armistice Dinner and Dance will take place on the 11th of November. As we did last year, our guest speaker will be the winner of the recent cadet speak-off. Also this year, we will have our cadets form the Colour Party and also a group our cadets will serve our dinners. Its great to these young people perform. We are proud to advise our 515 Squadron has grown in strength to 31 cadets.
We'll top off these events with our ever growing and popular Afternoon Tea and Bake Sale on Monday December 2nd. This has become a great success and we have gained a top notch reputation in the local area. Your wonderful cakes and cookies and breads are not to be equaled.
Our New Yearís Eve Gala will finish out the year with, hopefully, a view of the fireworks over Quidi Vidi. This year our menu will offer, what has become our traditional New Year's menu, of Shrimp Cocktail followed with Prime Rib dinner and all the trimmings and a scrumptious dessert table. We are offering a two tiered ticket price for this function, giving our members a break on the price; i.e. $50.00 single or $100.00 double with no increase over last year and $60.00 single or $120.00 double for guests. This price reflects the necessary increase in price to accommodate escalating costs.
This is a whole new approach we are attempting. Other clubs in the area have had great success promoting this musical treat for local patrons. Many of us remember the local music groups who made it big in the 70's and 80's in St. John's and other areas around the province. Well a group of these musicians have regrouped and are calling themselves The Generations. They are:
Lou Skinner - the Ducats
Bob Frelich - the Commanders
Derrick Pelley - Figgy Duff
Justin Martin - an up and coming young star
Watch for more information on this event, itís been a sellout whenever itís been offered in local clubs.
Our Building Refurbishment Project is continuing. Since last year we have managed to finish some work on the interior of the Wing. The current project underway is to repair the floor of the front entrance . This repair job is critical, as it not only serves as the entrance to the front of the building, it also poses a safety hazard to people using this entrance. We need help!!! Call Brian Earle if you have any time and muscle to offer.
We have also purchased and had installed a commercial dishwasher. This item has been long coming and we were very pleased to finally have the revenues to afford this purchase.
Our Ways and Means and Building Refurbishment Committees are working hard to bring in revenues . The current drive is a 50/50 TICKET DRAW which will be drawn for in May 2014. This an escalating prize and should all the tickets be sold, the winner could win $2, 500. Also, the winning ticket seller will win $100.00 prize.
In conclusion, You will note that we are bringing back the Christmas Social this year. This was a long standing tradition that faded out over the last few years. We think itís time we change that. Let's all celebrate and welcome in the Christmas Season together. See You at the Wing.
