February 2014
Well folks, here we are into another year already. Little did we know how cold this winter would be and that we would be dealing with black outs and power shortages. Meantime, we finished up the year with a great New Year's Eve Gala and were able to welcome the New Year in with our friends and fellow members, amidst good food, music and dancing, along with fire works over Quidi Vidi.
We're beginning the year with our ever popular Darts program, with teams filled to the maximum, followed by our first TGIF Dinner set for January 24th. As well, the After 5 Dinners will begin soon. These in house events are very popular with our core members and its good to see them up and running so well.
Our Auction & Bridge Afternoon Teas are on board already and are a great success. We are now at capacity level, booking up to 26 tables of bridge and 6 tables of auction. Jeanne and Clayton and a great team of volunteers make this event continue to grow in popularity with the public. It takes a great deal of hard work to make this happen and this team digs in and gets the job done. Hats off to you!!!
Our Semi-Annual General Meeting is set for Saturday, February 8th, weather permitting. We will ask members to bring some finger food to augment the social part of the afternoon. The Phone Committee will call and remind you of the date. Please try and attend. All spouses and partners are warmly welcome. It will help keep you up to date on what's going on with our Wing.
On February 15th we are holding a great Rock N Roll event, featuring "The Generations" who come to us from the ever popular local bands in the 60's 70s 80s - The Ducats, The Commanders, Figgy Duff , as well as some new talent on the local scene. With a prime rib dinner and all the trimmings, we are getting a lot of interest in this event. Be sure to get your tickets by the cut off date of Wednesday, February 5th. Meantime, we could have a sell out before this date. Don't miss out!
Our Flipper & Prime Rib Dinner will be set some time in April and should bring in a house full of patrons. Watch for the date and get your tickets early.
The building refurbishment program is moving slowly but surely. More work will continue over the winter, again with the help of our hard working volunteers. We finally have a much needed commercial dish washer and a new cooler installed in the kitchen and thanks to the events program, we were able to buy these items outright.
Our 515 Air Cadet Squadron is continuing to grow and thrive with the drive and hard work of dedicated young officers and our Liaison Team. The current strength is 37 cadets the highest number in many years.
In closing, I must say I am gratified to see so many of our members willing to help keep our Wing operating so well. Bring your friends to some or all of our events. Again, a big thank you to all our hardworking volunteers who made 2013 so successful; and a special thank you again to our great team, Jeanne and Clayton, whose dedication and hard work goes many times beyond the call of duty.
Please try and attend our Semi-Annual General Meeting in February. All partners and spouses are welcome. We always have a small reception afterwards which is usually a nice time to interact with other members. Bring some finger food.
To all - my very best wishes for health and happiness in the New Year.
